Sew better in 2011

In 2011, I will sew at a relaxed pace, enjoying each process yet taking each step seriously to create fabulous garments (and quilts, bags, etc.)

I will enjoy all aspects of sewing -- including cutting patterns and fabric, fitting, pressing, ripping and re-stitching seams. As with work and chores, I always underestimate the time it takes for me to complete sewing tasks, and when I'm not meeting my self-imposed deadlines, I rush through projects in the wee hours of the morning in the hopes of wearing them the following day. Yes, it is exhilarating when I complete a project, but the entire sewing process feels like work -- exhausting! Sewing should feel like anti-work -- fun and relaxing!

The exhilarating feeling of completing a project has been so addictive that I churned a number of items this year (some of which I have not blogged about). Yet, none of them were very well-made. Late night sewing resulted in many wonky-seamed, ill-fitting clothes. One more reason to slow down the sewing.

Slowing down the pace also means actually learning sewing techniques, instead of just winging it. I hardly advanced my sewing skills this year due to "winging it". Yes, I've made things I've never made before, but most of them have been crappy because I did not take the time to learn and do them properly.

Hopefully, this 2011 note-to-self will bring me one step closer sewing prowess :)
